The martyrdom of Imam Ali
The martyrdom of Imam Ali (a.s.) is one of the events of the first century AH that had a profound impact on the situation of the Shiites. The martyrdom of Imam Ali (a.s.) led to the massacre of the Shiites and the destruction of Imam Ali's armies. With the martyrdom of the Imam, various tendencies, differences and resentments emerged among the people of Kufa. Some of Imam Ali's companions have likened the army of Kufa after the martyrdom of the Imam to a flock that has lost its shepherd and is under attack from all sides by wolves.
Khawarij
A group of Khawarij gathered after the Hajj, who were unhappy with the condition of the Muslims. Finally, three people swore to kill Imam Ali (a.s.), Muawiyah and Amr al-As. Ibn Muljam vowed to kill Imam Ali (a.s.). Imam Ali was the guest of his daughter Umm Kulthum on the 19th of Ramadan. Before the morning call to prayer, he went to the mosque. He woke up the people sleeping in the mosque for prayer, including Ibn Muljam, and stood up for prayer in the mihrab.
Ibn Muljam struck the Imam on the head with a sword while he was in prostration or while raising his head from prostration. The Imam was taken home and examined by a physician named Athir ibn Amr. Athir was one of the Tabi'een. When Athir realized that the stroke had reached the brain, he asked the Imam to make a will; because he did not have much longer to live. Before his martyrdom, the Imam fainted several times. He prayed sitting down and made wills to his children.
Qattam's role in the martyrdom of Imam Ali (a.s.)
According to historical information, Qattam bint Shajanah played a role in the martyrdom of Imam Ali (a.s.). When Ibn Muljam asked for her hand in marriage, she offered her dowry of one thousand dirhams, a slave girl, and the killing of Imam Ali (a.s.). Accepting these conditions, Ibn Muljam married Qattam. Qattam's father and brother had been killed in the Battle of Nahrawan.
Tomb of Imam Ali
Imam Ali (a.s.) was bathed by Imam Hassan Mujtaba (a.s.), Imam Hussein (a.s.), Muhammad Hanafiya and Abdullah ibn Ja'far. Imam Hassan (a.s.) led the funeral prayer for the Imam. Imam Ali (a.s.) was buried at night. The grave of Imam Ali (a.s.) was kept secret for fear of being dug up by the Khawarij and the hostility of the Umayyads. Then, during the reign of the Abbasids, Imam Sadiq (a.s.) identified the grave.
