The 21st of Ramadan
The 21st of Ramadan is two occasions, one is the night of Lailatul-Qadr and the other is the night of the martyrdom of Maulana Mu'taqian Ali Ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him).
The first occasion of Laylatul Qadr:
The Night of Power is the great night in which Allah Almighty revealed the great book, the Quran. The Quran about which Allah Almighty says in Surah Al-Hashr:
﴾21﴿Verse
If We had sent down this Quran on a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and falling apart for fear of Allah. And We set forth such parables for the people that they may reflect.
Allah Almighty revealed this great book on this night. And Allah says in Surah Al-Qadr:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
This is the night in which the Quran was revealed to the heart of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) once.
Why is this night called Shab al-Qadr?
This night is called Qadr because it is the night in which the making of destiny and the distribution of the divine command takes place. It is narrated in Imami and non-Imamii sources that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) saw the Banu Umayyah ascending his pulpit in a dream, and this Surah was revealed (Al-Dur al-Manthur), in which he said: This night is better than a thousand months. Thus, the rule of the Banu Umayyah lasted a thousand months.
And while describing the virtues of Laylatul Qadr, he says:
And what made you know what the Night of Power is?
The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.
It is a favor from Allah Almighty to make one night better than eighty-three (83) years, and eighty-three (83) years is one lifetime. Every year, a person gets one lifetime in one night for worship.
This is a blessed night and the angels and the spirit descend.
The angels and the Spirit descend in this night with all (determined) orders by the permission of their Lord.
It is narrated in Al-Kafi from Imam Sadiq (a.s.) that he (a.s.) said: On the night of the 19th of Ramadan, destiny is made, on the night of the 21st, the final decision is made, and on the night of the 23rd, the action is implemented. There are several narrations in Al-Durr Al-Manthur 6:632, 636, 637 that the Night of Qadr is the night of the 23rd. In a narration from the same book, it is mentioned that on the morning of the 21st of Ramadan, traces of soil were seen on the forehead and nose of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.). This also indirectly shows that prostration is performed on soil.
This night is peace until the dawn.
